Peer Evaluation Process/Timelines

Articles submitted to Cogitare Enfermagem go through a three-stage analysis process.

Once submitted via the OJS – Open Journal Systems platform (http://ojs.homologa.ufpr.br/cogitare/login), a submission number is assigned, which serves as the manuscript’s identifier in the system.

In the first stage, the article is received and assessed by the Editor-in-Chief, who will look at the following items: scope, timeliness, relevance, ethical issues, and the method used to carry out the research. The article may then be rejected or forwarded to the technical reviewer (up to 7 days).

In the second stage, the

analyzes the article according to the rules preparation of the article and supplementary documentation   and submits it to the anti-plagiarism software. At the end of this stage, the article can either go straight to the third stage or be returned to the authors for adjustment to the standards (within 30 days).

In the third stage, once the article has been adapted to the standards, the Associate Editor sends it to two ad hoc consultants to analyze the text using the proper evaluation tool. If there is a disagreement between the consultants' opinions, the text will be sent to a third consultant (up to 120 days).

In the fourth stage, the Associate Editor will make a recommendation to the Chief Scientific Editor, who will decide whether to approve, reformulate, or reject the texts, based on the evaluations made by the consultants and the Associate Editor (within 7 days).

The Associate Editor manages the entire flow between the consultants and the corresponding author and will have his/her name published as the person responsible for the evaluation.

After analysis by the referees and the final version, the article may be Rejected or Accepted, according to the decision of the Editorial Board, and the result will be communicated to the corresponding author via the e-mail address provided during the submission process.

During the analysis process and before the article is sent for publication, the corresponding author may withdraw the article, upon formal request and signed by all the authors.

Cogitare Nursing adopts two types of peer review:

  1. Double-blind review (preferred): when authors and reviewers do not know each other's identities.
  2. Open review: when authors and reviewers know each other's identities.

By 2027, we will have all types of review open. This period is one of adaptation and adjustment between reviewers and authors. The type will depend on the article's entry into the journal, e.g., in cases of articles deposited in preprint repositories, it will be open.

Articles with emerging themes or special calls may follow the "fast-tracking" system, to facilitate the exchange of questions and results produced on neglected diseases and emerging themes in the health area, especially in Nursing. The evaluation process will be accelerated by the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal and the Editorial Board , who may approve or reject the manuscript.

The Editor-in-Chief and the the Editorial Board the composition of the volumes for publication.

The editing process includes the following steps: final check by the technical editor, final check by the scientific editor, standardization, spelling review, translation request, receipt of the translated article, PDF layout, final reading by the author, publication on the Journal's website, XML tagging, and submission to databases.

The average time expected for completion of this process is 45 days.

Cogitare Enfermagem has a team of accredited translators (including nurses) who issue translation certificates. The article will only be published with the translation certificate (for both English and Spanish).

Preprints

Cogitare Enfermagem accepts the publication of preprint articles (A preprint is defined as a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and which is deposited on reliable preprint servers before or in parallel with submission to a journal. This practice joins that of continuous publication as a mechanism to speed up the communication of research. The preprints share with the journals the unpublished nature of the articles and inhibit the use of the double-blind procedure in the evaluation of manuscripts).

Submissions from nationally and internationally recognized preprint repositories will be accepted. This information must be included in the Open Science Compliance Form (download), submitted as a supplementary document.

AI-Assisted Technology Declaration

Cogitare Enfermagem recognizes that LLMs (Large Language Models) may serve as valuable tools for research. Authors must disclose whether AI-assisted technologies (LLMs, chatbots, or image generators) were used in the preparation of the submitted manuscript, strictly for improving readability and language quality during the writing process. The use of such technologies must be supervised by researchers, as AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, or biased.

AI-assisted technologies must not be listed as authors. Authorship entails responsibilities and contributions that only humans can fulfill, as outlined in the ICMJE criteria available at: http://www.icmje.org/recommendations. Authors must ensure that their manuscript does not contain plagiarism, including content and images generated by AI. Proper credit must be given for all cited materials, including full references.

With regard to the use of AI or other LLMs in the writing process, authors must include a statement in the Submission Document (download) with the following content:

The authors declare the use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the writing process: during the preparation of the study entitled: ...... the author(s) used [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] for [SPECIFIC PURPOSE, e.g., language editing, translation, etc.]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication.

Additionally, the use of AI must be mentioned in the Methods section of the manuscript, specifying the name of the tool and its purpose.

Open Data

Aligned with the Open Science movement, Cogitare Enfermagem encourages authors to publish open data, codes, methods, and other materials resulting from their research — typically underlying the texts published in academic journals — in public online repositories such as This information must be included in the , submitted as a supplementary document.

Aligned with the Open Science movement, Cogitare Enfermagem encourages authors to publish data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from their research — which are typically embedded in the text of published articles — in open online repositories.

It is important to note that, in specific situations and at the discretion of the Editors regarding an accepted manuscript, the deposition of data in open repositories such as SciELO Data, Zenodo, Figshare, OSF and Mendeley Data.

Information regarding data deposits in repositories must be included in the Open Science Compliance Form (download) which should be submitted as a supplementary document. For further information, please refer to:

Open Access Policy

Cogitare Enfermagem provides public access to all its content, adhering to the principle that free availability of research fosters a greater global exchange of knowledge. Such access is associated with increased readership and citation of an author’s work. For more information on this approach, please visit the Public Knowledge Project, an initiative that developed this system to enhance both academic and public quality of research by distributing Open Journal Systems (OJS) and other software tools supporting the open access publishing model for scholarly sources.

We inform that, during the editorial process, authors will be requested to complete the Data Availability Statement, which will be provided by the Technical Review team. This statement, which will be published alongside the article, describes whether and where the underlying data supporting the study are accessible (within the manuscript itself, in a public repository, or upon request), ensuring transparency and enabling the reproducibility of the results.
