Abstract

This research aims to analyze the approach to sexuality, gender questions, sexual and reproductive rights, and the pedagogical activities of nurses who develop educational groups on contraception. The professionals referred to here participated in the Total Attention to Women’s Health/Contraception course funded by Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Health Board. It is a synthesis of descriptive study developed with a qualitative and ethnographic approach, participant observation and interviews. The course in question affected participants differently, not only due to differing lengths of professional experience, but also because of generational differences. The groups observed presented different characteristics and were classified in the following ways – by informative space and by dynamic space. It is considered that the professionals acting in the educational groups are social actors who can/must contribute to guarantee sexual and reproductive rights, in such as way as to attain the acclaimed ‘total attention’ to health.
