Abstract

This study aimed to analyse the meaning of the childbirth care performed by nurses that work in the delivery
room. The qualitative study was carried out at a large public maternity in the city of Fortaleza-CE, in April 2007, through a
semi-structured interview with seven obstetrician nurses. The information was analyzed according to Bardin Content
Analysis. The results after the analysis of 713 thematic units and 25 subcategories were classified in five categories: the
woman as protagonist of the childbirth; family, environment and assistance: important aspects in the care process; the
formation professional for the humanized childbirth; team work: base of the childbirth care humanized of Health institutions:
co-responsibility for the humanized childbirth. It is considered that the humanized care should be ruled in a multiprofessional
and assistance with focus in the well-being of the binomial mother and son.
