Abstract

It is an experience account of an activity performed by Nursing undergraduate students from September to December/2006 in their curricular internship. The objective is to report changes implemented in a pediatric surgical unit of a University Hospital. It was perceived the need to implement some physical changes in the facility in order to diminish children’s suffering and trauma while hospitalized. Thus, ten rooms from the unit were remodeled. Decorative colored sticks and stamps were placed in many different locations; boxes were wrapped; a colorful panel was elaborated in the procedure room. A toy room was established in the cafeteria. Between meals, the cafeteria was changed into a toy room capable of entertaining the children in the unit. The environment was made happier and more colorful, bringing life to walls and objects that are part of hospitalized children’s daily routine.
