The aim was to identify the use of the computer in daily routines of hospital nursing practice and discuss the impact it has on care. It is a descriptive-exploratory, quanti-qualitative study, which used a semi-structured questionnaire for interviews, observing 45 nurses in two hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, one of which was private and one public. The data was analyzed via Discourse Content Analysis and by categorization methodology. The result of the study was the construction of an analytical category titled ´the reorganization of nursing work processes based on information technology´. Through analysis of this category it was concluded that nurses did not participate in the construction of the electronic information system or the patient electronic records. It was concluded that computer use in nurses´ daily routines, in both institutions, is carried out empirically despite the informatization of the private hospital being greater than that of the state one. This shows the lack of systematization of care carried out with the help of computers.
