Abstract

Cross-sectional study that examined the association between sociodemographic indicators, conditions andself-rated health, cognitive status and depressive symptoms in elderly people assisted by the Family Health Strategy. Theinformation was obtained through home interviews using the Mini-Mental State Examination and Geriatric DepressionScale. We interviewed 503 elderly and 34.4% had depressive symptoms. The logistic regression model revealed a strongassociation between depressive symptoms and poor self-rated health (OR 12.38, 95%), sequels of stroke (OR 9.65, 95%),economic inactivity (OR 3.19, 95 %), cognitive impairment (OR 1.77, 95%), non-participation in social activities (OR 1.94,95%) and per capita income of up to half the minimum wage (OR 1.86, 95%). The findings do not enable the determinationof the direct influence of variables on the occurrence of depression, however, the results provide subsidies to steerdiscussions about the determinants of depressive symptoms in the elderly.
