Abstract

Some oncological patients, facing the disease, choose non-conventional therapies in order to minimize the symptoms. Thus, this exploratory-descriptive study with a quantitative approach aimed to: find out about the prevalence of using alternative therapies by patients undergoing chemotherapy. The sample encompassed 65 patients, during chemotherapy sessions, at a university hospital in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul State, in September 2006. After data analysis and discussion, it was evidenced that 69% of the subjects were using alternative therapies associated to chemotherapy, being phytotherapy the most used one with 82%. Due to the high prevalence of alternative therapies, we believe nursing professionals must obtain further knowledge on these practices, in order to guide patients effectively, thus improving their quality of life.
