Salmonella enteritidis/Enteridis outbreak in a broiler house producer of free-range chickens in south of Maranhão state, Brazil

Abstract

The aim of this study was to detect the agent that cause high mortality of chickens in a property in the south of Maranhão, as well as determining the infection source. They had been chickens necropsy and carried through bacteriological analyses of organs, intracardiac blood and chicken food. The samples proceeding from the intracardíiac blood, the organs and the initial chicken food had presented characteristic colonies of Salmonella. These colonies had been submitted the biochemical and serologic tests for evidence of the patogen. Salmonelosis is considered an important disease in the poultry keeping and can cause serious ambient and economic losses, beyond the problem of public health. This story standes out the importance of a good sanitary handling and programs of control and prevention of illnesses in the creations.
