Retrospective study of canine mast cell tumor at Surgery Service of Small Animals - Veterinary Hospital of College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of Sao Paulo University

Abstract

Mast cell tumor is one of the most frequent tumors in dogs, with variable biologic behavior. Very few studies evaluate the epidemiology of this neoplasia at Brazil. This paper evaluated 260 cases of mastocytoma in dogs carried for this neoplasia at Small Animal Surgery Service of Veterinary Hospital of College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of São Paulo University, in the period of seven years (2000-2007). 139 animals were males and 121 were females, with the mean age 8.5 yeas old. Mixed dogs represented 26.15% (n=68) of all dogs with mastocytoma and 73.85% were dogs with defined breed. These defined breed dogs 101 (52.6%) were Boxer and  the others 91 dogs were from different breeds, like Labrador, Pinscher, Dachshund, Fox Paulistinha, that were the breeds with major occurrence. Gender predisposition was not finding. The majority of animals were old dogs. Greater number of animals showed a total survival of more than one year, after the treatments, like surgery, chemotherapy or combination of treatments, however 54% of animals were dead, in the period of seven years, with the majority of dead in a period of one year of the start of treatment, showing the malignant of these neoplasias.
