Abstract

Larvae of Dermatobia hominis were harvested from naturally infected animals, and treated in laboratory conditions in order to play its life cycle. With the development of all stages of D. hominis in the laboratory, from the laying of eggs until the formation of a new imago, will become possible to assess the conditions for the survival of each stage, which could help in the development of new techniques for its control. We tested different ways substrates for the development, consisting of land, sand and sawdust. Different means employed for the development of pupa, D. hominis were considered satisfactory, but statistically different (P<0.05). Treatment composed of sawdust and sand, was the most appropriate means, for presenting development of 54% of L3 larvae and pupae in 62% of those in adults, D. hominis, and 79% males and 41% females. The average life of adults also varied according to sex, whereas 49% of the males had a lifetime average of 5 days, as 70% of females had a lifetime average between 8 and 9 days.
