Abstract

Documental research was undertaken with the purpose of reviewing scientific literature and obtaining  data found in studies on normative Corporal Punishment (CP). Sample: 90 abstracts of studies  undertaken in the last 13 years (1990 to 2002). These studies were selected from the PsycINFO  database. Qualitative documental analysis was carried out on the contents of the results. The principal  results encountered were: 1) high incidence of CP; 2) variation of opinions on the use of CP  depending on a diversity of factors; 3) situational, socio-demographic, cultural and religious factors  influence the use of CP; 4) normative CP has negative effect on ones children; 5) CP tends to be  passed on from generation to generation; 6) CP represents a risk of mistreatment. The analysis of the  data enabled the discussion of the use of CP as well as to draw the attention of the scientific  community to the importance of studying this subject.
