This paper presents some results of our inquiry about the contribution of brasilian institutes of higher
education to the development of the etanol industry. These results reveal that the academy is deeply
involved in providing expertise for an “unsustainable” economy, instead of oportunities for active social
learning, essencial to look for new definitions and solutions to the problems faced by contemporary civilization.
