Abstract

This article presents the conclusions of research (PARD/UFPA/CNPq, 2006) that analyzed the significantrole of the press in exposing environmental issues in the past decades (1975-2002), with emphasis ondeforestations and forest fires in the Amazon. This article points at the media as an essential multiplieragent of information to the digital media, the role of the Brazilian government in the root causes of environmentalproblems in the Amazon, the causes and effects of deforestations and forest fires in the regionand the social agents involved in this process. About 1.300 reports published in Brazilian newspappersand magazines during the last decades were analyzed.
