Abstract

In this work, I defend that chegar is an auxiliary verb when followed by the preposition a and an infinitive verb in Brazilian Portuguese (PB), such as Almeida (1980) and Neves (2000) do. These authors say that chegar is an aspectual auxiliary verb. In Bertucci (2007), I argued for its classification as auxiliary verb, but against the idea that it expresses a terminative value, such as we notice in the auxiliaries acabar and terminar. In the present work, first I show some arguments to confirm the auxiliarity of the chegar; after that I present how Fauconnier's (1975) work can help us to understand the verb chegar in Brazilian Portuguese, under the point of view of the scalarity.
