Abstract

This paper aims to research the aspects of the transpositions of names from works by James Joyce in their (South) Slavic translations, as well as in texts written after the reading of Joyce’s prose in (South) Slavic countries. How do (South) Slavic translations maintain the ways of echoing the multilingual layers of the name in the title of Joyce’s Ulysses? Do these models of the transfer of polyphonic intertextuality of names in (South) Slavic cultures have a creative influence on further works that are conscious of the Homeric/Joyce paradigm in dialogues? How do the perspectives of the blooming of names from Joyce’s works in the (South) Slavic transformations open up new possibilities for interpreting the ex-(ec)centric echoes of the creative dialogues between the traditions of translations and their reflection on future studies? These are some of the points articulated in this paper to prove how even on the micro level of the names, the multilingual layers of globalization in the creative reception of one work depend on eccentric, authentic answers in the (ex-)centric cultural positions, especially when they emphasize that echoing Joyce’s works holds significant importance for their viewpoints.

Author Biography

Mina Đurić, Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade

Dr. Mina Đurić is an Associate Professor of Serbian Literature of the 20th Century at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade. In 2017, she completed her doctoral dissertation on the modernization of 20th-century Serbian prose in relation to the creative reception of James Joyce’s literary works. Her research focuses on comparative literature, interdisciplinary studies of modern and contemporary Slavic literatures in the context of world literature, Nobel Prize literature, literary theory, music, digital literature, and translation. She is a member of the Association for Serbian Language and Literature in Serbia; the Council of Vuk’s Endowment; the Commission on Slavic Literatures and Language Teaching of the International Committee of Slavists; the International James Joyce Foundation; the Italian James Joyce Foundation; the European Federation of Associations and Centres of Irish Studies; the John Updike Society, etc. She has participated in many scientific meetings (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Montenegro, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA) and held guest lectures at universities abroad (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland). She was a member of the research project Change of Poetic Paradigms in Serbian Literature of the 20th century: National and European Context (MPNTR, OI 108016). In addition to numerous papers and edited books, she is the author of an interdisciplinary monograph on modernist literature and music – Transmusicalization of the Text: The Music of Serbian Modernist Literature (in Serbian). She has edited and translated from German into Serbian a book on Dragoslav Mihailović, written by Robert Hodel, and edited books of selected Vasko Popa’s poetry and Dragoslav Mihailović’s prose. Mina Đurić has co-authored a digital exhibition Vuk and the Germans (in Serbian, German, and English). She has also co-authored several books for high school.
