Oral Health Education for People with Sickle Cell Disease: A Perspective Beyond the Clinical

Abstract

Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition characterized by a mutation in hemoglobin, leading to the sickling of erythrocytes, marked by complex symptoms that affect the connective and mineralized tissues of the entire body, including the oral cavity. A special focus on the part of the dentist is necessary, considering that interventions to ensure the oral health of this population should not be limited to the clinical approach, but should be based on preventive and protective actions. Therefore, this article is an experience report of an extension project on the use of health education to improve the oral health of people with sickle cell disease in the city of Feira de Santana. By carrying out activities such as waiting rooms at a Municipal Reference Center for individuals affected by the condition, it was possible to create a bridge with the public assisted, encouraging autonomy in health processes, as well as the search for dental care. The actions carried out proved to be effective in informing/training patients about oral health, promoting engagement and practical learning, and overcoming historical-social barriers. Despite challenges such as socioeconomic limitations, the project demonstrated the positive impact of preventive and educational actions on patients' quality of life and on expanding access to integrated care. In general, health education for individuals with sickle cell disease is important, contributing to clinical management, prevention and improving quality of life through a holistic approach that promotes autonomy and well-being for those involved.
