O trabalho é inerente à própria existência do ser humano, sendo que a sua evolução, associada ao uso da máquina no processo produtivo, gerou o fenômeno da industrialização, que é o principal fator de crescimento das cidades e, por consequência, da sua desordem. Estabelecida essa conexão, visa-se com o presente estudo aproximar o recente Estatuto da Cidade, especialmente por meio de suas diretrizes, ao meio ambiente do trabalho. A qualidade de vida da população de uma cidade está diretamente vinculada ao equilíbrio do ambiente laboral, motivo pelo qual os instrumentos de política urbana podem e devem ser usados pelos Municípios em prol da melhoria desse importante aspecto da vida diária dos trabalhadores.
