A tale of two cities: a bibliometric review of the 30 years of academic research on Mercosur

Throughout its 30 years of existence, Mercosur has been the subject of interest for researchers from various fields of knowledge, who have used different approaches to address the several aspects that encompass the bloc. This article seeks to map this production by conducting a bibliometric analysis. The selection of the articles that make up the research corpus was carried out using the Web of Science platform. Initially, we searched for articles that included in their titles, abstracts, or keywords the terms Mercosul or Mercosur. After filtration, a group of 363 texts were selected, with the subsequent analysis of this material through three bibliometric techniques: keyword co-occurrence; co-citation; and bibliographic coupling. Throughout these procedures, it was possible to identify the main themes, authors and approaches that guide the research on Mercosur. We have three main findings. Firstly, the European Union is central to discussions about Mercosur due to its centrality in the bibliometric networks. Secondly, the dominant themes in the corpus were related to “high politics”, development, and trade. Finally, in all the resulting bibliometric networks it is possible to verify the division of the studies about Mercosur into two distinct fields that barely interact with each other, one referring to the areas of Political Science and International Relations, and the other referring to the area of Economics, highlighting the lack of multidisciplinary approaches to deal with the subject.
