“Mixed Indians”: Xokleng historicity and ethnicity

Abstract

As the occupation of the Brazilian territory took the direction of the South, conflicts between Indians and white men became more intense. In the midst of this context were the Xokleng, then known as Santa Catarina states Botocudos, occupying the region ranging from Palmas, in Paraná state, until the state of Rio Grande do Sul. With the rise of SPI (Serviço de Proteção aos Índios), some of its functionaries have gone to Santa Catarina in order to pacify those Indians. In 1914, Eduardo L. S. Hoerhan, accompanied by non Indians as well as Kaingang people compulsorily transferred from Paraná, have established peaceful contacts with the Xokleng. From then on, these Indians have gradually come to live in the village (aldeamento) officially founded in 1926 with the name of Posto Indígena Duque de Caxias. From this contact on, these Indians have experienced transformations in their symbolic and material universe. Inter-ethnic contact has forced them to create new forms of identification.
