Abstract

As proposed by Benedict Anderson, the idea of nation is born only when conceptions of time shifted from a ‘messianic time’ (simultaneity of past and future in present) to a ‘homogeneous time’ (cross simultaneity – temporal coincidence, measured by calendars and clocks). This article begins with an account of narratives made by Las Ovejas’ peasants (Argentina) telling about their decision to contraband from Chile an image of San Sebastian and about the confusion created once they believed that a roman warrior were a shepherd. In such a context, these Argentinian peasants saw a warrior from the early chritianhood as a shepherd, and, simultaneously as a reproduction of themselves. In agreement with Anderson’s perspective, such a phenomenon implies a non-modern conception of time, and perhaps, a non-modern concept of space. However, in disagreement with Anderson, we state that there is no need for a linear conception of time in order to conceive and build a nation.
