Abstract

In the last two decades in Mexico, nongovernment and community-based organizations have emerged to implement programs where different sports are used as vehicles or tools to achieve other objectives that go beyond the quest for pleasure, exciment and recreation, they usually target children and youth living in vulnerable situations and poverty. Based on evidence collected in a systematic search, following the data collection and analysis methods proposed by Svensson and Woods (2017), 33 organizations that have operated programs like the ones described above in Mexico were identified. The purpose of this paper is to argue that the practices defined in the Mexican legislation as 'social sport' are related to practices described in the programs of the organizations included in this study and that they also present distinctive characteristics of the global movement 'Sports for Development and Peace' (SDP), as well as those depicted as social sport in Latinamerican countries. The coexistence of diferent notions to define similar practices suggests that there is a field in formation where stakeholders are negotiating in different arenas the boundaries and specificities of such field.
